Sky’s Embrace Newsletter

General Information

Sky’s Embrace is the official publication of Horizon Oasis OTO in Seattle, Washington. Sky’s Embrace is published monthly. Distribution of hardcopies is free at Horizon Temple, and through local businesses.

Submission for Publication

Submissions to Skys Embrace are gratefully encouraged. Unfortunately, we may be unable to publish all submissions due to limited space or other reasons, but every submission will be given serious consideration. One need not be local to the Northwest or a member of the OTO to submit, although works should pertain to subjects of interest to Thelemites.

The types of work welcomed for consideration include (but are most definitely not limited to) essays, articles, reviews, fiction, poetry, opinion, letters, ritual, visual art and photography, columns, plays, memoirs, reports on OTO body activities, event or policy announcements, classified advertisements, commercial advertisements and comics. For additional submission requirements, please read the appropriate section (below) for the type of submission you are sending.

Or by in-person delivery to the editor (by prior scheduling) at Horizon Oasis events. If you wish the return of your submission, please include a stamped, self addressed envelope with sufficient postage.

All submissions must include some indication as to how you would like your work to be credited. For example: “Brother Jack Handeman,” “Anonymous,” or “Jill M. Off”. Please include your e-mail address, phone number, and mailing address. You may include 1-2 sentences of biographical information which may or may not be included for publication (If appropriate and as space allows).

Note: Publishing the civil name of any OTO member requires their prior permission. If you include the civil name of an OTO member in your submission and that name has not previously appeared in Sky’s Embrace, you must provide evidence of permission.

Any creator whose work is accepted will receive three free hardcopies of the newsletter.

Written Works

All written submissions sent by e-mail must be included as an electronic file attachment that can be opened in MS Word. Do not send submissions as text in an email. If you are unable to send an electronic file by e-mail or postal mail, hardcopy submissions must be typed and single spaced; the only exceptions are for handwritten portions that are somehow integral to the piece.

All submissions must be spell-checked. All errors may or may not be assumed intentional and included for publication. The Editor reserves the right to edit as necessary; authors will be consulted if major changes are needed.

Submissions, excepting poetry and letters, should be between 200 and 2000 words in length.

Quotes must be cited, and endnotes included whenever appropriate. It is recommended (but not required) that nonfiction work make use of the American Psychological Association (http://www.apastyle.org/), Modern Language Association (http://www.mla.org/style), or the Chicago Manual of Style (http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org). Footnotes and endnotes are both acceptable.

Visual Work

Artwork is accepted electronically in .tif, .gif, .jpg, .png, or .bmp formats. All submissions must have a resolution of at least 300dpi, and must be less than 100MB in size – if you have a piece larger than that, please contact the Editor to make transfer arrangements.

All hardcopy submissions must be a two-dimensional, high-quality copy of the work (no originals), of a size no greater than 9” by 12”.

There are no restrictions on subject matter, and we are always interested in unusual pieces; additionally we welcome proposals for serialized artwork and cartoons.

Copyright Information

By submitting work, the creator guarantees that the work is original or in the public domain, and in no way infringes on any copyright or trademark. “Fair use” is completely acceptable, but should be kept to a minimum and properly cited. The creator is responsible for any legal repercussions of copyright and/or trademark infringement.

Creators retain copyright of their work.
